Why it matters

An SC/APC mechanical fast connector uses a mechanical clamping system to align and secure bare fibre in the field, replacing fusion splicing and epoxy entirely. The ferrule's 8-degree angled polish pushes reflected light away from the source rather than back down the line, which is why APC is the specification most passive optical networks require. If you're terminating FTTH drop cables at the subscriber end, this is normally the correct polish to stock — using UPC here instead can fail a PON's return-loss requirement outright.
