Why it matters

An SC/UPC mechanical fast connector uses the same mechanical clamping system as SC/APC, but with a flat-polished ferrule instead of an angled one. That gives 50 dB or better return loss — sufficient for LAN, access-network and general fibre installations that don't specify APC-grade performance. It's a lower-cost, equally fast option where the project doesn't call for PON-grade return loss specifically.
